Many Migraine Sufferers Given Unnecessary Opioids, Study Finds

Too many people with migraines are prescribed potentially addictive opiate painkillers, while too few may be getting recommended medications, a new study suggests.  Researchers found that of nearly 2,900 Americans who visited the doctor for migraine relief, 15 percent were prescribed opioids such as oxycodone (OxyContin or Percocet) or hydrocodone (Norco, Vicoprofen).

“We have a big problem the way many Doctors in the current medical system function when they prescribe medication before looking at other, non-addictive remedies. I pray the medical boards aren’t selling their souls to special interests to further the prescription first agenda by structuring continuing medical education, and treatment regimens to cater anyone group other than the patients we are supposed to be healing,” stated Dr. Ronald Klatz, President of the A4M.
