Excessive drinking is causing more deaths from illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease, new figures have revealed.

Deaths from conditions – such as bowel and breast cancer – rose last year, according to data released today.

There has been a 1 per cent rise in deaths from conditions related to drinking, from 22,779 in 2013 to 22,967 deaths in 2014, Public Health England (PHE) found.
