Rob B. from AZ asks:

Hi & thank you for this service from the Dr. Bob Martin radio show.

Anyway,  I have a cousin who is 65 (66 in March, 18) and she lives in Mass.

I live in AZ here. She recently dicovered and small tumor in her left breast under or near the nipple.  After a mammogram, ultra sound and biopsy it was diagnosed as cancerous in an early stage. She was given 3 options:

  1. Mastectomy w/ no radiation (complete breast removal) – Seems drastic for diag.
  2. Lumpectomy and radiation treatments
  3. Lumpectomy & NO radiation – and becoming part of a 10 year study for women in their 60’s who choose no radiation. This was initiated in the UK originally as a study for women in their 70’S, deemed to be fairly suvvessful so they now want to study women in their 60’s.

Any of the 3 above involve taking Tamoxifen for 5 years.

She also has osteoporosis – being post menopausal.

She is very naturopathic oriented and is leaning toward option 3. above. So radiation will NOT be an option then.

I told her I would lean more toward 2. above, since you only have a small window of opportunity to do the radiation & be effective.

We both believe option 1. too radical for early stage and a cancer she was told to have good cure success rates.

I, and I’m sure she, would be sooooo appreciative of any advice you can give knowing FULL well that its her decision not yours and you will not be held responsible for whatever you may suggest ok.

God bless you and thank you for any help you can give.  I’m just trying to help her out as she is in a state of shock with the diagnosis.

Sincerely,   Rob B.
