Certain bacteria in babies’ stools boost their cognitive ability in later life, new research reveals.

Youngsters with a high number of specific bacteria, known as bacteroides, score higher in tests that assess their language, perception and motor skills at two years old, a study found.

Perhaps surprisingly, babies with a low diversity of bacteria in their stools do better in such tests than those with lots of different species, the research adds.
