The first prescription of an antibiotic is ineffective in around one in four adults with pneumonia, a study has found.

The news comes as health ministers of the G20 leading economies were warned ‘the world risks a return to the pre-penicillin era’.

The growing problem of antibiotic resistance has been described as one of the biggest threats to global health by the World Health Organization (WHO).
