US rushes to approve new generic heart drugs amid major shortage after millions of pills were contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals in Chinese factory

US health regulators have approved a new version of the common blood pressure drug valsartan amid a major shortage.

The new drug, Diovan, is made by Alkem Laboratories Limited in Mumbai, India, the US Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the FDA continues to investigate the standard suppliers – China’s Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals Co and India’s Hetero Labs Ltd – after trace amounts of cancer-causing toxins were found in their products.
